25/05 《正念的奇迹》// 《The Miracle of Mindfulness》 /一行禅师
What is mindfulness? Before reading this book, I had already read many related books over the past few years: The Zen of Beginners, Insight, Ten-Minute Meditation, and I have also practiced meditation for a while. However, it was often sporadic and somewhat half-understood.
This time, upon reading this book, I had a sense of enlightenment. The author spent a considerable amount of space clarifying one thing: What is mindfulness.
Mindfulness is not equal to meditation, nor does it mean positive thoughts. It is “focusing perception and awareness on the present moment,” a shift and infusion of attention, maintaining awareness of the current reality.
For example, truly eating an orange by focusing on each segment.
In work, focusing on the work, staying alert and clear, ready to respond to any possible situations, and adapting spontaneously.
Wholeheartedly and calmly immersing oneself in the present moment without distraction, like a stone sinking into a lake, causing no ripples on the surface.
During my reading, what kept recurring in my mind was my experience of walking carefully along difficult paths during a trek.
This was a breakthrough for my understanding. I realized that mindfulness is not about emptying the mind, but about being completely present and peaceful.
I remember hiking in GaoliGong Mountain. Two logs tied with wire served as a makeshift bridge over a waterfall, with flowing water below.
The guide quickly crossed first, then it was my turn. I took a few steps and found my foot caught—probably the drawstring of my hiking pants caught on the wire. I stumbled and became unsteady, so I had to quickly use my trekking poles to maintain balance. I slowly retreated, adjusted my pants, and then continued crossing.
In those few quiet seconds of retreat, my mind felt like it sank into the lake’s bottom—without panic or thoughts, all my senses were focused on my right foot, the wire, and the tree branch.
My foot gripped the shoe firmly, my hand gripped the pole tightly, and I moved silently. I was calmly and attentively balancing between feeling the subtle connection with the wooden bridge, removing my foot.
That moment, I was fully present in the now.
In that tense, dangerous moment, calmness and self-control helped me escape that danger.
Was that experience good or bad? From the perspective of the moment of being caught, it was definitely terrible. Any mistake could have led me into the water. But now, looking back, being caught gave me a genuine experience of mindfulness, a gift that the mountain gave me as I was leaving.
Different moments and thoughts give rise to different concepts. But “Dharma is not fixed in nature.”
From trekking to work to life—everywhere is the same. Whether for easy or difficult tasks, under pressure from performance goals or not, the most important moment is always one: the present. This is the only time we can fully control.
What can I do? At this moment, based on the current situation and facts, do what I can and what needs to be done.
Just like walking each step on a treacherous path during a trek.
